Abstract—TheIndian society and economy have suffered human and financial losses as a resultof the poor safety record in the construction industry. Owing to its relativelylabor-intensive nature, construction works provide opportunities for employmentfor a wide range of people skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled. Despite itsimportance, construction industries are considered risky with frequent and highaccidents rates and ill-health problems to workers, practitioners and endusers. The findings of the study show that all responsibility on riskmanagement is with the contractor, and it is carried out only during constructionphase. The study will also reveal several factors of poor safety management.Thus the paper will conclude by providing a set of recommendations andstrategies to contractors for improving their safety performance.
