Carbon Negative Cement: A Review
Abstract
ABSTRACTConcrete is the world’s most versatile, durable andreliable construction material. Next to water, concrete is the most used material, which requiredlarge quantities of Portland Cement. OrdinaryPortland Cement production is the second only to theautomobile as the major generator of carbon dioxide, which polluted the atmosphere. Around 8% of globalcarbon emission is happen due to concrete. Inaddition to that large amount energy was alsoconsumed for the cement production. Hence, it isinevitable to find an alternative material to theexisting most expensive, most resource consumingPortland Cement. Most of the CO2 footprint ofcement is due to the decarbonation of limestoneduring the clinkering process. Designing newclinkers that require less limestone is one means tosignificantly reduce the CO2 footprint of cement andconcrete. A new class of clinkers now underdevelopment can reduce CO2 emissions by 20 to30% when compared to the manufacture oftraditional Portland Cement Clinker. Simplemodification in manufacturing processes and in rawmaterial and also in curing processes can help inreducing carbon footprint of cement
